There are a lot of bazaar ramadan around and lots and lots of food.
It's also nice that everything seems kinda slower-paced.
But there is one thing that is not so nice about fasting month. People here in West M'sia is kinda funny.
I don't know if they are ignorant or plain clueless.
If you are not Chinese or Indian, they automatically assume you are Malay and Muslim. It can be really difficult going for meals in public during day time for people like us who are not Chinese or Indian looking.
Sometimes its also funny how during other months people thought i'm Chinese/Indonesian/Filipino/Vietnamese but during Ramadan, I'm a Malay.
Some of my Borneoan friends look "Malay" and they have to show their IC when buying food. I'm lucky i never had that experience. I know some people will say
"What the heck. Just eat la. You are not doing anything wrong."
Unless you are thick-faced, then eating in public during ramadan is not a big deal. But it's really uncomfortable when people stare at you with that judgmental look that says
"Eh dia ni tak puasa ke?"
I have a guy friend who looked "malay", had breakfast at a mamak. He was thick-faced enough to endure these accusations thrown by the staff
"Eleh mamat ni. Orang lain pun tak puasa jugak tapi takde la nak makan kat khalayak ramai macam tu."
Like helooo...Kalau kitorang Muslim sekalipun dan tak puasa, tak kan la weolss bengong sangat nak makan kat tempat awam kot.
Agak-agak la kan?
Some people say, wear a crucifix pendant then to let them know you are a Christian. If you think that'll solve the problem, it doesn't.
A friend of mine wore her crucifix at all times. When she was in the residential college's office of a uni, the kakak in the office said to her
"Adik, adik tau tak berdosa pakai salib?"
?!!??!?!?! mindblown
I wonder why with internet, wifi and easy access to information, there are still ignorant people.
So bulan puasa ni, I decided that I will be a pinoy. Heh! Kumusta ka?
