My friends knew how many times i complaint about strangers who thought i'm a Filipino. I thought only West Malaysians do that but it seems that even Sarawakians, Australians, Thais and everyone else thought I'm a Filipino. I mean do i look that different?
I got labelled as Vietnamese, Indonesians, Thais sometimes but it was always Filipino. Initially i was mildly insulted people thought that i'm not local. I mean no insult but you know how Filipinos in this country is always associated with housemaids, with night clubs, with masseuse, with mistresses and home-wreckers. Of course there are good ones around who are professionals with respectable jobs but that's another class of Filipinos.
As time goes by, i got tired of explaining where i'm from or what's my race. It'll invoke more questions when i said I'm a Sarawakian. I'll have to explain that "No, we don't live on trees and never were." or "Sarawak is also a part of Malaysia. It's East Malaysia." or "Yes, we do know how to speak BM or English." or "We come here with airplanes. We do have airports you know." Sometimes it's funny when people asked what race i am, i'll always say "I'm a Sarawakian." The non-ignorant ones will ask what particular race i am while the ignorant ones will say "Oh, so you are not Malay?"
Sometimes i tried to be honest up-front and said I'm a Sarawakian but i always got "Oh, i thought you are Filipino." but most of the time, when i'm in no mood to give lengthy explanations, I'll just smile and said
"Yes, I'm a Filipino. Kumusta ka?"
Okay, so that's the only few sentences of Tagalog that i knew. I probably should learn more to be more convincing as a pseudo-Filipino.
At times, while i'm out with my girlfriends and got approached by guys we didn't really trust, almost always i'll introduce myself as Isabelle from the Philippines, have worked in Malaysia for many years. Funny enough, they believed it. See, I'm starting to embrace the Filipino in me. hahaha.
Now i'm looking at a different perspective of being labelled as Filipinos. Filipino girls are beautiful and exotic and i definitely love their accent. Maybe i'm beautiful and exotic like them too? Oh and see how many agreed that Jericho Rosales is super gorgeous.
Hmm..I'll probably marry a Filipino one day.
Anyway, Magandang araw sa'yo! (okay, i google translated that)
