Sarawakians And Gardenia's Bun Obsession
Or there's no more space left for your luggage in the overhead compartment of the airplane because it is stuffed with buns?
Tiada space di overhead compartment itu memang mengundang kemarahan.
These people are most definitely Sarawakians (my friends claimed Sabahans do that too).
I don't know who started it but the obsession with Gardenia buns happened because there is no Gardenia in Sarawak. Why oh why.
It's not like there are no good buns or bakeries in Sarawak. It's just that Gardenia has this sense of awe to it.
like "These are not sold in Kuching you know."
or "Bapak kamek beli tok dari KL nun, kitak tek ada?"
or something like that...It's like a souvenir from KL. It's similar to the obsession of Peninsular Malaysians with Kek Lapis.
Anyway, some of their bread is actually really nice. I personally like the chocoraisin bread.
Anyone who lived in the peninsular sure has been given the daunting task to bring these buns whenever they go back to their hometown.
Me included.
After almost a decade of living in peninsular, I have perfected the art of buying and bringing back these buns and bread.
Hmm..this scenario looked familiar...photo credit to littlehealer.wordpress.com |

Instead of buying in bulk at the airport shop and painstakingly carrying it as hand luggage and struggling to find a storage space for it on the plane, I bought them in stages few days before I was due to fly home.
I buy a little bit from this shop, a little bit from Giant, a little bit from Carrefour, Jusco etc, pack them nicely in a box, and checked in the box at the airport.
So I don't look stupid struggling with lots of hand luggage and I can saunter gracefully like a classy lady that I am into that departure hall.
Pandai kan? Sudah la cantik, pandai pulak tu. Heh.
Well, like you said, those are souvenirs.
ReplyDeleteMy dad bought a few loaf of Gardenia bread from KL. I love them. Ahaks!
haha! must buy punya souvenir
DeleteWell, u know what?
ReplyDeleteWe do the same method awesomely haha. I bought at least at three places before proudly swinging my plastic bag from airport. Bila sampey epot dgn sopan santun melenggang kangkung ngembak satu plastik sederhana berjumlah RM43, hahahahaa.... walhal dlm sigek luggage all packed with Gardenia, woohoo...
