Healthy Food: Are They Really Healthy?

In search of a healthier lifestyle, we choose foods that are labeled fat-free, preservatives free, less sugar or anything with the word oat, whole-wheat, multi-grain on it. 

We eat breakfast cereals instead of rice porridge because we think it is healthier.

But is it so? 

Let's at some of the foods that we often think are healthier.

1. Granola Bars

Well, nuts and grains are good. Grains provides dietary fiber and nuts gives you the good kind of fat. But then again, don't forget these bars are often high in sugar. Some bars even contain chocolate chips, making them as bad as candy bars. 

1 bar can contain a whooping 200 kcal. 
That's quite high, considering the size of the bar.

2. Yogurt with Fruit


Fat free doesn't mean healthy. Labels tell you they contain added sugars, corn syrup or artificial sweeteners. 

Yogurts should taste tart. If it tastes like ice cream, it contains added sugar and other “enriched” ingredients. 

Healthier option is plain unflavored yogurt mixed with fresh fruit cut into pieces

3. Over-the-counter Sandwich


Often labelled "fitness" or "light", but drenched in mayo, sauces and salad dressings, little veggies & proteins and too much white bread. 

Healthier option is to make your own sandwich, load on the vege & protein.

4. Breakfast Cereals


Cereals are labeled healthy & nutritive and recommended for weight loss but do be aware of the sugar content.

Always read the label and be mindful of the right portion sizes.

5. Store Bought Fruit Juices


Even 100% fruit juice has added sugars, usually fructose. Cans of fruit juice contain up to 38g sugar per 8oz. 

Better alternative is to make your own juice or eat fruits. Eating fruits means you are also consuming the dietary fiber which improves its glycaemic index.

To eat healthy, eat foods that are unprocessed and still in its natural form. i.e an orange instead of orange juice or canned orange. 

I know its hard to avoid processed foods but again, its about moderation and portion control.

    1. the best is to do like our grandparents/parents in kampung. plant own vege, catch own fish or meat. but then its not that feasible too when you live in the city. haha

Beauty In Its Simplicity

Pulau Perhentian Travelogue Day 2: Ayuh Snorkelling Mencari Nemo Wow banyaknya anak ikan. Aummm Belum baca cerita Day 1? Klik disini ye. Pagi-pagi buta seawal pukul 7.30 pagi iols dah bangun. Bangun awal sebab semangat nak terjah breakfast buffet hotel. Yang agak mengecewakan, weols semua 10 orang tapi yang hotel bagi complimentary untuk 6 orang sahaja. Jadinya yang 4 orang lagi tu makan megi dan roti dalam bilik jeh. Kalau tak complimentary, the breakfast buffet is RM30 per person. Hmm. I somehow think it's not worth it So weols rotate la. Hari ni iols breakfast kat restoran, besoknya iols breakfast dalam bilik. Our fav spot Restoran Sharila resort ni ada outdoor seating.
