Cholesterol Oh Cholesterol

okaaayy..that's funny and gross at the same time :D

About a month ago, i had my cholesterol checked (it was in conjunction with Nestle Omega Plus promotion). Although the test was only 80% accurate (non-fasting etc), my cholesterol level was a little bit on the high side. *faints* . I was baffled because i watched what i eat, i TRIED to exercise and live healthy. So what is cholesterol?


  • Cholesterol is a type of fat produced by the liver and is vital for normal body function. Every cell in our body has cholesterol in its outer layer. 
  • It is carried in the blood by molecules called lipoproteins (LDL @ "bad cholesterol", HDL @ "good cholesterol" and Triglycerides)

So what is normal and abnormal level?

  • Optimum : Lower than 5mmol/liter
  • Mildly high cholesterol level: between 5 to 6.4mmol/liter
  • Moderately high cholesterol level: between 6.5 to 7.8mmol/liter
  • Very high cholesterol level: above 7.8mmol/liter

And what causes high cholesterol?

  • Nutrition - dietary cholesterol (from eggs, seafood etc) does not have much of an impact in human blood cholesterol levels. However, saturated fats do! Foods high in saturated fats include red meat, sausages, hard cheese, lard, pastry, cakes, most biscuits, and cream (there are many more).
  • Sedentary lifestyle 
  • Overweight/obese
  • Smoking 
  • Alcohol - people who consume too much alcohol regularly, generally have much higher levels of LDL and much lower levels of HDL.

Foods that lower cholesterol:

Avocado

Beans - soy anyone?

Dark/bittersweet chocolate

Garlic

Walnuts, almonds and other nuts - practice portion control though because nuts are high in calorie.

Olive oil

Red wine

Salmon & fatty fish (tuna, sardines)

Tea

Oats (who doesn't know already?) - contains beta-glucan that absorbs LDL which then excreted by the body.





Oh well, i guess i'll just have to continue exercise, cut down on fast foods, fried foods and try to swallow oats (it's the hardest thing to swallow, sticky with weird texture :p)

    Checking our cholesterol level is indeed very scary. My cholesterol level is not that good too because of my poor eating habit.

    I guess, we all need to control of food intake and I wonder why fat people out there seem to be happy with their body and eat like nobody's business. Ahaks!

Deko Laman Kecil

Minggu lepas sis ada post gambar makeover laman rumah yang siap dalam masa 3 hari. Rupanya ramai jugak yang ingin mempunyai laman yang cantik dan kemas kan. Ye la, balik kerja stress petang-petang. Jadi kalau ada laman yang kemas, hati pun sejuk dan tenang je.  So uols pun bertanya-tanya macam mana sis buat laman tu? Ahh senang aja. Sayang tak buat apa-apa sebab lokasi dan saiz dia penuh dengan potensi untuk menjadi sebuah laman yang cantik. Idea untuk deko laman itu memang ada cuma proses melaksanakannya membuat otak sis jam. Tanah rumah tu mendap dan turun beberapa inci. Jadi ada ruang yang perlu diisi supaya laman itu nanti sama rata dengan konkrit rumah. Mana lagi nak tanam bunga, rumput dan deko?
