Have you noticed that by doing something very simple can make a very big difference?
So does saying someone's name. How do you feel when someone said your name? I know it made me feel strange in the first place, like how does this stranger know my name? Then slowly I felt special because this person made the effort to know my name, remembered it and say it out loud.
It is an effective ice-breaker because immediately I see them as a friend instead of just a stranger. It is heart-warming when they say my name because they see me as Cynthia and not just another customer or stranger on the street. The attention is personal. They really get my attention and I tend to remember them. It is a sure-fire way to make someone feel special. I know it works on me.
Read THIS on saying people's name.
One of the staff in the gym always greet me by my name and I ended up dating him for a few months. (Duuhh..Cynthia, you are so easily pleased). And it is from him that I learned the importance of saying someone's name and I tried to practice it in my daily interactions.
Then, the other day I was at this bank I usually go to. I've never really chat with the staff while waiting for them to settle my things. Usually it's just "Hi" then "Thanks". So there I was standing at the counter then the staff, a guy (obviously), asked me
"Cynthia meniaga ke?"
Terkejut juga la sikit2. Abis la..Apa la dia mo tanya saya ni??! I've never talked to him and he obviously got my name from the system. So we chatted a little. bla bla bla. Then before I leave, he said
"Thank You Cynthia"
That really had an impact on me. I felt special and mattered. Not only because he said my name but most importantly he pronounced it correctly.
So you see, it's not hard to make someone felt special and make a difference in someone's life. I found this article to be really nice and simple to follow. It's nice to make someone feel special because admit it, we all wanted to feel like we are special right?
