Last 2 years, there was an uproar on school canteen food and it's relation to increased prevalence of obesity among children. I voiced my opinion and wrote to The Star regarding this matter. Click on the link to read the article (http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=/2011/4/25/focus/8546322&sec=focus) Ironically, the first person to notice that article was my supervisor/lecturer and she immediately text me...
Anyway, i personally think healthy eating habits start at home. How healthy parents eat will determine the eating habits of their children. While it is a good step to sell healthier foods at the canteen, we must also remember that the canteen operator is doing business and when people do business, they want profit. If you don't sell nasi lemak or fried nuggets/fries at the canteen, someone else outside the school will. It is also funny that unhealthy food is always cheaper.
It is not only about food but how physically active you are. i remember during my schooling years, i DON'T LIKE PE class. Not because i hate being outdoor or doing physical activities but the activities are so dead boring (Sorry PE teachers, i know you are just doing your job). It's always, always, always run around the school under the hot sun..sometimes tennis or basketball but not everyone is sport-talented! Why can't they do something more interesting like aerobic or zumba for the girls? I think exercise and physical activities should be something that interest you and fun.
A+ for the effort. Ko hadooo?! |
