Sarawakians, especially Kuchingites have this passionate love affair with kolo mee. This is especially true for those who worked and lived outside Sarawak. We in KL are on the constant hunt for kolo mee. It is so hard to find one that is as authentic and original as the one in Kuching. Most of the time, the ones we found are "close enough but not yet there". There is always something missing in that bowl of kolo mee.
Sometimes i wonder what's this obsession with kolo mee? Maybe it reminds us of home, of our happy childhood when kolo mee is a treat and a luxury.
One's idea of a perfect kolo mee differs according to a person but generally a good kolo mee has got to be made using the original kolo mee (not wantan mee or others), cooked just right. Not too soggy, not too springy. In a more fancy term, it has got to be al-dante. The noodles must be complemented with sweet and savoury char siew slices, minced pork cooked with soy sauce, a dash of fried onion oil and a sprinkling of spring onions. Eaten together with some pickled red chillies (the big ones, not cili padi). Some prefer white, i like mine red (char siew sauce added). To have a few pieces of wantan, prawn or liver is a luxury but i'm happy enough with the normal ones.
Just like every other food, presentation is as equally important as the food itself. The noodle has got to be served in a bowl, preferably a ceramic bowl with a rooster painted on it. Sometimes any bowl will do.
The search for a bowl of perfect kolo mee has brought us around KL and Selangor. These are a few places that we have tried:
1. Sg Chua Sports Complex, Kajang - I would give 4/10. The stall is manned by foreign workers who i believe have absolutely no idea about kolo mee. They called it Sarawak Mee here.
2. Tar Chong Equine Park, Sri Kembangan (Behind Jusco/Aeon Equine) - 5/10. The tauke is from Sibu. The minced pork was nice and they sell Sarawak Laksa too here.
3. Pandan Indah - I forgot the name of the shop. I would give 6/10. The tauke who is a Sarawakian manned the stall.
4. Puchong - I forgot the exact location. Duh. It was our first hunt. 5/10
5. Asia Cafe, Puchong - We didn't get to try one as it was closed when we were there. You can go and try and let me know.
We, Sarawakians, would swim an ocean of fire for a bowl of perfect kolo mee :D
