The Pseudo-Filipino

My friends knew how many times i complaint about strangers who thought i'm a Filipino.  I thought only West Malaysians do that but it seems that even Sarawakians, Australians, Thais and everyone else thought I'm a Filipino. I mean do i look that different? I got labelled as Vietnamese, Indonesians, Thais sometimes but it was always Filipino. Initially i was mildly insulted people thought that i'm not local. I mean no insult but you know how Filipinos in this country is always associated with housemaids, with night clubs, with masseuse, with mistresses and home-wreckers. Of course there are good ones around who are professionals with respectable jobs but that's another class of Filipinos.  As time goes by, i got tired of explaining where i'm from or what's my race. It'll invoke more questions when i said I'm a Sarawakian. I'll have to explain that "No, we don't live on trees and never were." or "Sarawak is also a part of Mal...

As We Walked Through Life: A Decade of Friendship

Mordi, Atiq, Cosmas, Beth, Martina and I were good friends since our Labuan Matriculation times. We had an awesome time in Labuan. So many sweet, sour, bitter memories. Studied together, had meals together, went outings together. We shared so many laughter and sometimes tears together. We were each other's pillar of strength while we were in Labuan and remained so through out our uni years and the years after uni. Oh the good old days. This year marked the 10th years we have been together.  This was during atiq's engagement January 2011 Martina's wedding reception November or December 2011. I forgooottt. sudah tua Atiq's wedding May 2012 Last weekend, my dear friend Mordi were in KL for work. At the same time, our dear friend Atiq's little girl, baby Zahra flew in from Kuching with her grandmother and uncle for a week. It was the perfect time for a little meet up. Even though we talked almost everyday, the last time i met them was May/June. So we deci...

What Is Glycaemic Index (GI)?

GI is a measure of how quickly blood sugar levels rise after eating a particular type of food. Different foods have different effects on blood sugar levels. Glucose (pure sugar) is used as a standard reference (GI 100) and other foods are measured against this. High GI foods break down quickly during digestion and release glucose rapidly into the bloodstream while low GI foods break down more slowly, releasing glucose more gradually into the bloodstream.  In short, foods with lower GI is better as it releases glucose slowly and will not cause a spike in blood sugar level. A high GI food causes a more rapid rise in blood glucose levels and is suitable for energy recovery after exercise or for a person experiencing hypoglycemia. In general, coarse, grainy breads with higher amounts of fiber have a lower GI value than white breads. Similar with rice, the softer the rice is (white rice, glutinous rice, Thai white rice), the higher the GI compared to brown rice. It is also s...

Bear Hug Is The Best Medicine

A hug is a universal medicine, it is how we handshake from the heart.  -Anonymous How often do you get hugs from loved ones, friends or families? Did you know that along with laughter, hugs is one of the best medicine? It is extremely effective at healing sickness, disease, loneliness, depression, anxiety and stress. For decades we’ve known that babies won’t thrive without physical holding and affection. It is also known that health benefits of physical touch including hugs extend throughout our lives. Research shows a proper deep hug, where the hearts are pressing together, can benefit you in these ways: 1. The nurturing touch of a hug builds trust and a sense of security. This helps with open and honest communication. 2. Hugs can instantly boost oxytocin levels, which heal feelings of loneliness, isolation, and anger. 3. Holding a hug for an extended time lifts one's serotonin levels, elevating mood and creating happiness. 4. Hugs strengthen the immune system....

Breast cancer is a cancer that starts in the breast tissue. It is the most common cancer in Malaysia, accounting for 18% of cancers overall and <30% of cancers in women.   Fortunately, more and more women are surviving breast cancer and in other countries, with early detection and effective treatment, more than 90% of women survive at least 5 years. However the situation might not be true in Malaysia where patients often present at late stage. You can read more on signs and symptoms, risk factors and protective factors, prevalences, facts and figures on the net. What i'm going to share with you in this post is Breast Self Examination (BSE). Knowing what is normal for you may help you see or feel changes in your breasts. The best time to do BSE is once a month, about 3 - 5 days after your peri...

Girls Talk: Social Media and Relationships

I'm sure almost everyone uses social media now. It's not surprising to hear that a 7 year old kid has a Facebook account. Like it or not, its becoming an unavoidable and important part of our life now. With smartphones, social medias are just a touch-screen away.  You would think social media and relationships is an unintelligent/stupid/shallow topic but there were many research done and scholarly articles written about it. I for one does not think it's shallow. Sociology and human studies have my interest and social media certainly has an impact on human interaction.  If we were to look on the positive side, social media helps us to connect with everyone in the easiest way possible. We are more conne cted nowadays. Its amazing that you can talk to each other everyday even though you are at the other end of the world. But if we were to look on the negative side, yes we are more connected but we became less interactive. We are so consumed with social media via our s...

Girls Talk: Confession of A Bachelorette

Sitting in Chilla Cup and trying to think of something to blog about. Inspiration struck me and was about to write something when this hunky hot gorgeous personal trainer from the fitness studio i went to came, said "Hi", sat next to my table and started to chat with me. I suddenly can't think straight and idea pun entah pergi mana sudah.  20 minutes later he left. Pheeewwww.....The power of someone gorgeous. Anyway, back to our topic. Most of us spent a lot of our time looking for love. Wondering if we ever will find THE ONE. Most of us are guilty of determining our self-worth based on our relationship status. I'm not worth a thing because no one wants me. Saya loser sebab saya tidak laku etc. There is so much emphasize on being in a relationship. It's like the be all and end all of life.  "Why are you still alone? You are too choosy, high taste and demanding."  "Memilih sangat. Bila la mau kahwin. Nanti sudah kerepot tidak laku, tiada o...

6 Easy Peasy Smart Eating Tips When You Eat Out

6 Easy Peasy Smart Eating Tips When You Eat Out What's old but never gets old? Attempts at losing weight. It's a continuous struggle when you lived in Malaysia, the land of fatty but glorious food. Well anyway, we Malaysians loved to eat out, aren't we?  Eating out is becoming unavoidable especially if you are living away from your family (no mom to cook for you) or you use meal times to socialize.  There's nothing wrong with eating out but like everything else, it has to be done in moderation and smartly. After all, outside foods are known to be unhealthy (high in calories, fats, cholesterol, sodium, etc) Here are a few simple tips you can apply the next time you eat out. 1. Skip The Sweetened Beverages I have always observed people like to order sweet beverages like sirap ais, milo ais, teh ais etc when they eat out.  Those beverages contained sugar, sugar is calorie.  And the milkier it is the higher the calorie content. Therefore you are consu...

The Sweet Scent Of A Memory

Did you know that smell is one of the most powerful senses? A smell can bring on a flood of memories, influence people's moods and even affect their work performance. We've all experienced this: a familiar perfume, a family recipe, the scent of a bonfire—they all bring back barage of memories, whisking us away to re-live our past for a moment.  When you first smell a new scent, you link it to an event, a person, a thing or even a moment. Your brain creates a link between the smell and a memory.  So the next time you smell the same scent, it triggers a certain memory, mood or remind you of a person. For example, the scent of freshly baked Famous Amos cookies reminds me of airports because that's where i first smelled it. Scent of freshly cut grass reminds me of Saturday morning in my old house because that's when they usually mow the lawn. It's amazing isn't it? How does this happen? The olfactory nerve (sense of smell) is located very close to the...

Let's Zumba!

You don't say. Zumba is an aerobic fitness program featuring movements inspired by various styles of Latin American dance and performed primarily to Latin American dance music. I have this affinity for Latin dance, music and everything Latin which i think is kinda sexy. I even named my car Carlos as i imagined him to be this dark, sexy, mysterious, macho Latino. I'm so proud of my imagination sometimes. heh.  Zumba is great for those who like dancing, who found other types of exercise boring. Jogging is BORING.  Anyway, i attended my first Zumba class with my work-out buddy yesterday. I've done Zumba in the house,in front of the tv with no one around but never in a class. It was amazing. There were quite a number of people, young and old, fat and thin. You would think Zumba is only for girls but the instructor is a guy and there were a few guys too which seemed to me were enjoying themselves in the class.  A good instructor engages their students, creates choreog...

Fitness Frenzy

In recent years, more and more gyms have sprung up. If you walk around, more and more guys are getting buff. More have joined gym, it's part of the lifestyle nowadays. In a way it's good that more people are health-conscious and taking care of themselves. But then they start to be too obsess. Ok this is funny.. Anyway, yesterday a few friends and i went to a fitness studio/gym. Another two was already a member while another friend and i were just checking it out. Since i was very interested in zumba, aerobic and other classes they offered and since i  finally have a work out buddy, i was thinking why not just check it out. Sambil2 cuci mata di gym la konon. The manager briefed us, showed us around and did a body analysis for us.Then came this trainer who explained the result to us. You would think that eating healthy, exercise regularly and have a normal BMI would be enough. With this trainer, everything about my body analysis is wrong. Okay so my fat mass was excessi...

Finally it's the weekend. It's not just a mere weekend. It's THE weekend of partayyy and i've got tickets for the two days.  Jasmine and i went for the 1st day as another 2 friends couldn't make it. There were 3 stages with different DJ's and you can go to any stage that you like. The highlight for today was Pitbull and DJ Antoine. Pitbull was A.W.E.S.O.M.E! and now i'm officially a big fan. It was raining heavily in the evening but thankfully it stop for a while when we were on the way...then it started to drizzle while we were there. Walaupun hujan, kami tetap bersemangat tegar untuk bergembira. Have you danced in the rain? We have and it was pretty amazing. My PI...

Law Of Attraction Or Coincidence?

I'm sure most of you have heard about the Law of Attraction. It is the belief that "like attracts like". The Law of Attraction states that every positive or negative event that happened with you was attracted by you. You get what you expect. Focus on the good things to get good things. Radiate positive energy to attract positive things.  There are many ways to apply this Law of Attraction. It can be applied in business, personal achievements, even love and relationship! But i'm not going to elaborate it here. There are a lot of information on the net. Mengarey kat internet padah orang Sarawak. It's only a click away. Read this article on applying Law of Attraction on your love life which i found amazing. I would like to share my personal experience.  Okay so it goes like this. I really wanted to go to this We Love Asia concert because Pitbull is coming. Not that i'm a very big fan but it's something interesting to do over the weekend. It's a ...

The Ripple Effect Of Kindness

The inspiring story of a tourist who offered a poor girl his slipper... One act of kindness inspired others to reach out and help others. When people benefit from kindness, they will often do something nice in return. It's basically like throwing a pebble into the river and the see ripple effect.  The society we lived in now is getting more selfish. It's all about the survival of the fittest. People take advantage of others. Instead of loving people and using things, they loved things and used people.  Think about where you are in your life right now. Ch ances are at some point in your life you received help from someone to help you get to where you are today. Perhaps a teacher offered you extra tutoring, you friend patiently teaching you although they have an exam to study for, or your parents made huge sacrifices so you could go to college.  Sometimes the act of kindness does not have to be monumental. It's amazing how little acts of kindness can have so muc...
